Do Cardamom and Cloves Make A Great Taste Combination?

Cardamom and cloves are two spices that each have their own history. Cardamom has been used for 4000 years to make a variety of sweet and savory dishes while cloves have been used in European cuisines since the 11th century with many uses from cooking to medicinal purposes. It can be challenging to decide which spice to substitute in recipes because both have a long list of diverse flavor combinations. Do cardamom and cloves make for a great taste combination?

What makes cardamom and cloves work well?

Cardamom and cloves are both spices that come from the same tree. Both members of the ginger family, cardamom is a brown spice that is ground and used in fragrances and flavors. Cloves, on the other hand, are dried buds from a tree in thePiper nigrum family. They are most often used as a spice in cooking, but can also be inhaled as a nasal mask or infusion.

Typically, cardamom is used to give a sweet flavor to dishes, while cloves add an earthy taste. However, these two spice blends can also work perfectly together in baking or curries because they balance each other out. In particular, cardamom and cloves pairs well with each other when it comes to creating cookies or cakes with a subtle but noticeable flavor difference.

Recipe for a delicious boule of sweet butter cookies

If you’re like most people, you LOVE the taste of a good butter cookie. But did you know that cardamom and cloves can make for a really great taste combination? In this recipe, we’ll show you how to create a delicious boule of sweet cookies that are bursting with flavor from both cardamom and cloves. Just take our word for it – you’ll LOVE this recipe!

Cardamom and Cloves Butter Cake Boule Recipe

1 1/4 cup warm milk + 1 tsp water
180g Sugar (packed)
2 3/4 cups flour  – all-purpose, bread, or pastry flour is best: do not substitute with regular table sugar. Course or superfine, as you prefer. Do NOT use strong bleached flour.
1/2 tsp baking powder
3 large eggs beaten lightly (you may use a whisk, electric beater or your hand to blend the eggs and allow them to incorporate into the dry ingredients over heat. In some cases, quick cookers and mixers will help with incorporating the ingredients.)
1 tsp vanilla extract
6 Cardamom
7 Cloves
9 oz butter (tub), softened

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400F and grease a 10” x 10” baking pan. The icing for this recip  is store-bought. It seems like an odd combination, but it’s surprisingly well balanced !

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large clean bowl.

Add your butter and egg mixture; whisk it together.

Add the vanilla extract. Pour over the flour and cardamom powder and mix everything together with a spoon until all of the ingredients are well combined. Stir the cardamom into the batter with a wooden spoon to activate their flavour. Using wooden utensils (as opposed to metal or plastic), helps them spread nicely across everything instead of packed into one place on your baking sheet!

Pour batter over prepared baking pan; spread evenly, smoothing out in all directions so that no bumps or rumples remain (just like you smoothed out ebony wood for my son’s board game!).

Place baking pan, with baking sheet and all contents, on a low convection, then preheat your oven to 400˚F/200˚C. Bake for about 30 minutes and when the cake has started to brown very slightly on top (150 reqoired at 28˚C) take it out. If the cake has not yet started to set, return it to the oven for an additional 10 minutes until it does start to harden up nicely. Remove from oven and allow to cool while you prepare the syrup.

I made this recipe back in February, but I had a rough go at taking pictures…the kids got all my good ones 🙂 I had such fun coming up with this moist delicious

Not only do they create a delicious flavor, but they can also work well together when it comes to health benefits. In this article, we’ll explore some of the other spices and herbs that create a flavorful combination and why you might want to consider adding them to your cooking arsenal.

Peppermint

Why Peppermint? Peppermint can work well with a number of herbs and spices including cloves, tarragon, and other compounds. It works well in sweet desserts and would be delicious in any kind of rub for beef or pork. The therapeutic use for peppermint is impressive because it helps combat coughs, respiratory issues, stress and anxiety. But, none of that does anything useful if you horde it away! A good trick to employ when adding peppermint to your dishes is to add an extra twist at the end. Add ground peppermint to recipes such as hot tea or tomatoes where you want the benefits but not the added flavor. That way, your taste buds will receive a little treat while still receiving all of the health improving benefits of peppermint!
