Step 4Drink The drink will be ready when it’s like gingerade when poured off the spoon or jar. If it’s not quite perfect yet, don’t worry – try again a few minutes later and it will be ready. Use your tongue to check if the drink is alright by running it along the inside of the glass, just as you’d do with a lolly test. Mashed up ginger root can be used instead if you really want to get your hands on ginger root but can’t get hold of any fresh ginger juice. In fact, you could prepare this drink either way, with orange juice or without (but without ice cubes). You’ll have to tell us what you think though!

Step 5Get creative: The drink tastes very sweet so you’ll probably need lots of ice cubes to cool it down. You can serve the drink in any glass – even a wine glass – but we recommend using a tall, thin one for the visual effect and to make your guests feel like they’re in an exotic location. Of course, you don’t have to serve it in a glass at all: why not pour the drink over ice into a jug or even directly into shot glasses? The possibilities are endless!

Ice cubes
6 ounces light rum, such as white Puerto Rican rum (Do not use dark rum or bourbon.)
1 ounce simple syrup

How to Make It:

Place 2 ice cubes in a glass and pour 1 ounce of the rum over them.
Add 3 slices of ginger, then slice the remaining piece into thin strips that are about 1/8 inch thick. Place the pieces on top of the ice cubes, then add a few more ice cubes and pour in 3/4 cup of lemon juice.

Mixing instructions: Pour all ingredients (except for the ginger strips) into your blender or food processor, then blend until everything is combined and smooth. Pour the mixture into shot glasses and top with some of your sliced ginger strips. Serve immediately!
